OSHGroup - COVID 19 Vaccinations and the Workplace

BACKGROUND

  • COVID 19 continues to spread across the globe and Australia is currently experiencing its most significant outbreak.

  • NSW remains the epicentre of the current outbreak.

  • Across the globe there have been over 206 Million cases recorded with 4.3 Million deaths.

  • In Australia, there have been 41,500 cases and 972 deaths recorded. There are nearly 9,000 active cases.

  • The Australian Government’s policy is that receiving a vaccination is free and voluntary, it aims to have as many Australians vaccinated as possible with the first goal being 70%.

  • The main limitations remain vaccine supply and access. Most age groups (over 16) can now access the vaccine.

  • One of the biggest issues being discussed are ‘Mandatory Vaccinations’

  • The current state of the vaccine roll out can be viewed here: (LINK)

EMPLOYER CONSIDERATIONS

This is a very dynamic situation for employers. Based on OSHGroup’s experience with employers trying to navigate various COVID 19 challenges, here are a few vaccine related items to consider:

  • Early and open consultation is an essential element in managing vaccinations in the workplace. This is the same for Hepatitis B as it is for COVID 19.

  • There may be specific employer obligations covering change management or consultation as defined in employment awards, agreements and/or policies.

  • When looking at COVID 19 vaccination programs employers should consider the following aspects:

    • Prepare for personnel accessing vaccination appointments and possible sickness or adverse effects post vaccination.

    • Scenarios where workers refuse vaccination or are unable to receive the vaccine can be managed with appropriate advice.

  • The main limitations remain vaccine supply and access. Most age groups (over 16) can now access the vaccine, so it expected that more people (employees) will be seeking and receiving the vaccines.

  • One of the biggest issues being discussed are ‘Mandatory Vaccinations’ . Again, consider scenarios where people can not or will not receive the vaccine.

  • Proof of vaccinations is another contentious issue. These systems are in place for other vaccines (Yellow fever) and all COVID 19 vaccinations are captured on the the Australian Immunisation Register (LINK).

  • State and territory governments have made and will continue to make public health orders requiring workers to be vaccinated for COVID 19. Employers and workers need to comply with any public health orders that apply to them. (LINK).

This is not an exhaustive list of considerations. OSHGroup is well placed to provide organisational and case level advice for employers trying to manage the ongoing COVID 19 challenges.
